"IN SOMNIS" 2014

2222 - 4231 - Timp+2 - Solo Violin - Str

Work Introduction

“In somnis,” latin for “in sleep” or “in a dream,” was inspired by Picasso’s 1932 painting “The Dream.” Reflecting on this image, a woman who has drifted asleep in her armchair, I imagined a variety of scenarios she might be experiencing in her subconscious, despite the apparent peaceful surface visible to us. I am interested in exploring the blurred lines between different states of consciousness, a theme central to Surrealism, so the sections in this piece abstractly represent the blurring and crossing of those different lines in and out of the conscious and subconscious mind, and the idea of dream-states versus reality.
